• Crop and vegetation diversity, including vertical diversity of herbs, trees, and bushes; and integration of animal husbandry, beneficial insects, and microorganisms.
• Healthy soil-building practices, such as the use of compost, beneficial soil microorganisms, erosion control, and minimal use of mineral fertilizers.
• No soil or environmental contamination, such as using genetically modified organisms. The idea is to use integrated pest management and protect the farms from potential sources of contamination from neighboring farms.

Agricultural Research Farm - California - USA

Nutrilite's Agricultural Research Farm in Lakeview, California, is the primary location where our farm researchers work to improve existing NUTRILITE products as well as identify nutrients and active ingredients for new products and the development of organic farming practices.

• 45 hectares (111 acres)
• Located on a prehistoric lake bed, which accumulated nutrient-rich sediment, contributing to the fertile topsoil.
• Primary crops: pomegranates, rosemary, and many test crops.

By feeding the soil with compost and by using carefully tested farming practices, Nutrilite creates a better soil structure – supplying crops with a vast array of nutrients.

At our Agricultural Research Farm in Lakeview, local volunteers from the community help raise organic vegetables for their own use. In addition, the NUTRILITE Agricultural Research Farm organizes programs with local schools, bringing area students to the farm to grow crops as a school project each year.

Trout Lake Farm - Washington State - USA

Trout Lake Farm is the largest certified organic herb farm in North America. Located in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, the farm's irrigation is provided by the White Salmon River, fed by glaciers from the mountains.

• 283 hectares (700 acres)
• The Trout Lake valley where the farm is located is all organic – there is no conventional farming in the valley and the surrounding mountains help keep out pollution and contaminants.
• Primary crops: Echinacea purpurea, St. John's wort, horseradish, white kidney beans, dandelions, Echinacea angustifolia, Valerian, peppermint, nettles, and many others.

At Trout Lake Farm, the temperature, sunlight, and moisture levels change from year to year at different altitudes in the valley, so the farm must be carefully managed to ensure consistent yields of its many crops.

Rancho El Petacal - Jalisco - Mexico

Rancho El Petacal, located in southwestern Mexico, has the ideal growing climate with plenty of sunshine and rainfall – the perfect conditions for growing nutrient-rich plants for existing NUTRILITE™ products, and for growing test plots for research.

• All 566 hectares (1,400 acres) are certified 100% organic.
• The farm is a major source of jobs for the small community of El Petacal.
• Primary crops: lemons, red grapefruit, mandarin oranges, watercress, parsley, spinach, garlic, alfalfa.

Fazenda Nutriorganica - Ubajara - Brazil

Fazenda Nutriorganica is the largest NUTRILITE™ farm. The farm produces acerola cherries year-round. Over 300 head of cattle on the farm provide natural fertilizer for the crops.

• All 1,660 hectares (4,100 acres) are certified 100% organic.
• Acerola cherries provide 100% of our need for the natural ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) used in NUTRILITE products.

Why Nutrilite

history

One Man, Carl F. Rehnborg

Prior to 1934, there were no known multivitamin/multimineral supplements. People found it difficult to know if they were getting enough nutrients in their daily diets.

Then, Carl Rehnborg, founder of the NUTRILITE brand, created his first nutrition product and became a pioneer in the history of nutrition.

His Dream

While living in China in the early 1920s, Carl Rehnborg noticed, amid unforgettable malnutrition and disease, an important connection between the foods people ate and their overall health.

• In farming communities, where fresh fruits and vegetables were plentiful, people were much healthier overall.
• In the cities, where diets included far more sugar, salt, and fat, Carl noted that there were many more instances of critical diseases, such as scurvy and beriberi.

During political unrest in Shanghai, Carl was isolated in a protected enclave. There, he conceived the idea of using nutritional elements missing from the typical diet as a way to improve overall health.

• Carl supplemented his meager diet with soups from what was available: local herbs, grasses, and vegetables, along with rusty nails (for iron), and lime stone and ground-up animal bones (for calcium).
• He shared his broth with a few friends, although the flavor was far from palatable.
• Months later, Carl and his friends who ate the nutrient-rich broth emerged from their enclave much healthier than those who had eaten only army rations.

Returning to the United States, Carl set up a small laboratory on California's Balboa Island, where, over the next six years, he conducted experiments using different plant varieties.

• He developed a way to dry these plants while still preserving their important nutrients.
• He created a formulation of alfalfa, watercress, and parsley, which became the basis of his first product.

Ultimately, Carl Rehnborg created the first multivitamin/multimineral supplement sold in North America.

How a Nutrilite Product Is Formulated

The process of formulating a NUTRILITE product usually follows this sequence:

1. The ingredients are evaluated for their physical properties – particle size and uniformity, density, and flow.
2. Trial combinations of ingredients are tested with excipients (inert substances) to evaluate how the blend flows.
3. The ingredients are compressed, producing prototype tablets.
4. Prototype tablets are evaluated for physical characteristics – hardness, dimensions, coating, propensity for discoloration, and stability of active markers.
5. Initial formulations are fine-tuned, and steps 1 – 4 are repeated.
6. The final formula is determined.
7. The finished tablets are created and evaluated for physical properties, stability, and active markers.
8. Manufacturing instructions are developed through scale-up trials, from gram quantities to hundreds-of-kilograms quantities.
9. A production-plant trial of the formula is run to produce finished tablets.

Nutrilite analytical chemists rely on highly sophisticated equipment and methods to support their work:

• Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry is used to screen raw materials and test finished products – especially to identify volatile components in essential oils, or to test for those preservatives and other ingredients not allowed in some countries.
• High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) separates the active compounds in a concentrate or finished product from other components. This lets the scientist identify them individually and accurately determine their levels. HPLC supports label claims and shelf life determination.

Nutrilite Bioassays: Identifying Beneficial Ingredients

In the bioassay laboratory, our scientists use cutting-edge research and equipment to help product developers identify the most effective ingredients for NUTRILITE products.

Every day, we run assays – or tests – to predict the effect of a particular ingredient on the human body. In 2005 alone, over 2000 assays were done, ranging from the effects of a particular antioxidant to synergistic studies involving specific combinations of potential ingredients for our products.

Bioassays measure the initial effects of an ingredient at the cellular, sub-cellular, and genetic level, using living cells. Later, clinical tests on human subjects will further our knowledge of an ingredient's effect.

Many of these tests involve the use of a sophisticated, robotic system allowing a scientist to program a test, set it up, and move on to other tasks, while the system performs the test and delivers the finished data directly to the scientist's desktop computer.

Nutrilite Microbiology: Ensuring Product Safety

Microbiology is the science and study of microorganisms, including algae, fungi, bacteria, and viruses.

Our microbiologists work every day to set specifications and test ingredients before the actual formulation of NUTRILITE products.

In addition, they determine safe levels of fungi such as bacteria, yeast, and mold – natural microorganisms inherent in the many farmed ingredients used in NUTRILITE products.

The job of analytical chemistry is to characterize and subsequently analyze the raw materials that go into NUTRILITE products.
